Masomo Bora: Kenya's Education Reforms Reshape Learning
Kenya's 'Masomo Bora' education reforms are transforming learning, boosting infrastructure, increasing funding, and enhancing practical skills development across the nation, benefiting millions.

Kenya's education sector is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by ambitious initiatives under 'Masomo Bora' (Better Education) and 'Ruto's Education Reforms'. These efforts are reshaping learning from foundational levels to higher education, promising a brighter future for the nation's youth.
Investing in Infrastructure and Practical Skills
A cornerstone of these reforms is significant investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Over 30 new TVET institutions are complete, with 23,000 classrooms and 1,600 laboratories under construction. This push ensures modern facilities for hands-on practical learning, addressing needs from many years. TVET enrollment grew from 297,000 to 718,000 in just three years, highlighting a clear shift towards practical, competency-driven pathways, preparing youth for immediate workforce entry.
Unprecedented Funding and Accessibility
Financial aid and institutional funding have seen dramatic increases. University funding surged from KSh 45 billion to KSh 82 billion, enabling program expansion and improved research. Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) allocations more than doubled from KSh 17 billion to KSh 41 billion, providing crucial support to vulnerable students. For the first time in years, KSh 44.2 billion in capitation funds for Term 1 were disbursed early and in full, allowing schools to plan effectively. The government also employed 100,000 teachers and 3,300 TVET tutors, strengthening human resource capacity in education.
Evolving Curriculum and Decentralized Learning
Reforms are streamlining the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) into Competency-Based Education (CBE), bringing clarity for parents and teachers while maintaining high standards. Over 450 industry-aligned Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) curricula have been developed, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for job market demands. Decentralizing higher education by chartering new universities in emerging regions further opens academic and research opportunities. This holistic approach ensures 'Masomo Bora' is a tangible reality, transforming learners' lives and strengthening Kenya's human capital for years to come.
